Heat stress on agricultural workers exacerbates crop impacts of climate change

چکیده

Abstract The direct impacts of climate change on crop yields and human health are individually well-studied, but the interaction between two have received little attention. Here we analyze consequences global warming for agricultural workers crops they cultivate using a economic model (GTAP) with explicit treatment physiological heat stress humans’ ability to work. Based metrics labor functions, combined meta-analysis yields, provide an analysis climate, both force, as well staple thereby accounting interacting effect land labor. sets crops, while also expanding highlight potential importance non-staple crops. We find, worldwide, yield within grains equally important at +3 ∘ C warming, relative 1986–2005 baseline. Furthermore, widely overlooked dominant in most vulnerable regions: sub-Saharan Africa Southeast Asia. In those regions, 3 could reduce capacity agriculture by 30%–50%, increasing food prices requiring much higher levels employment farm sector. welfare loss this level reach $136 billion, rising 5%,

Climate change impacts on crop yield: evidence from China.

When estimating climate change impact on crop yield, a typical assumption is constant elasticity of yield with respect to a climate variable even though the elasticity may be inconstant. After estimating both constant and inconstant elasticities with respect to temperature and precipitation based on provincial panel data in China 1980-2008, our results show that during that period, the temperat...

Non-heat related impacts of climate change on working populations

Environmental and social changes associated with climate change are likely to have impacts on the well-being, health, and productivity of many working populations across the globe. The ramifications of climate change for working populations are not restricted to increases in heat exposure. Other significant risks to worker health (including physical hazards from extreme weather events, infectio...

Presentation of an Operational Program to Reduce vulnerability of outdoor workers to to heat stress and climate change

Background: Outdoor workers are vulnerable to heat stress and climate change due to their occupational and environmental conditions. Short-term exposure to extreme heat (acute exposure) can lead to rise the core body temperature, which it may directly cause heat related illnesses such as mild rash, cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It is reported that long-term chronic exposure to heat l...

Climate change impacts on crop yield, crop water productivity and food security – A review

This paper provides a comprehensive review of literature related to the assessment of climate change impacts on crop productivity using climate, water and crop yield models. The existing studies present that climate change models with higher spatial resolution can be a way forward for future climate projections. Meanwhile, stochastic projections of more than one climate model are necessary for ...
